Aside from troops under the control of a Commander, troops will attack buildings closest to their spawn location and will continue to the next closest building. This is an important concept to understand because it makes buildings outside walls an integral component in stalling enemy troops, allowing your protected defensive buildings extra time to do their job. Walls add an additional layer of distance so depending on how you place your outer buildings, troops will either funnel around your walls after destroying the first outer building, or go straight towards attacking the building on the other side of the wall. Be aware of the distances between each building, both outside and inside walls and you’ll be able to funnel troops in the desired manner. Trap Placement Traps are a great way to stall or even blow up a pack of enemy troops. Place them in the right spot and they can be the difference between winning and losing. Attackers often like to go straight for enemy Alliance Portals to take out those pesky donated troops. These are great spots to put hidden Freeze and Bomb Traps since your Alliance Portal troops are able to take out large groups of attackers while they are frozen. Another great play players often place their traps are near their resource storages, which is used as a last deterrent against invading troops. After designing your base, watch a few replays to see where enemies tend to attack your base from which will give you a good idea of where to place your traps. Alliance Portal Troops and Placement Alliance Portals are an excellent way to stall enemy troops for a substantial amount of time. It is advantageous to join an Alliance with players that have higher level troops but this often isn’t the scenario - not a problem! Even lower level troops donated to you can have a massive impact on your base win percertange. Most attackers try to lure out Alliance Troops as fast as they can to eliminate that threat so placing your Alliance Portal as deep in your base and as close to your Castle is the best strategy. Attackers will try and penetrate your defenses and if they’re able to do so, often times they destroy only a portion of defensive buildings, leaving a pathway to the Castle with surrounding defenses intacted. Having the Alliance Portal activated once enemy troops get close to your Castle will give your other surrounding defenses valuable time to take out the enemy before reaching your Castle, although a clear path has already been paved. In the beginning stages of gameplay, you’ll most likely receive a mixture of Samurai and Archers. During these stages of gameplay, request that your Alliance donate Archers as default. Archers provide long range damage and occupy the same amount of space as Samurai so they are the most effective early on. This also holds true in later stages of gameplay if your Alliance isn’t equipped to donate Dragons yet. Intentional Spawn Zones Players sometimes like the use of trickery to confuse attackers and often times, this actually works! Leaving intentional 3x3 holes right in the center of your base is risky; however, if you surround the area with enough defensive buildings, the attacker won’t have enough time to release all of their troops to destroy even a couple buildings! Also, this strategy forces the attacker to bunch all of their troops together so if you have surrounding splash damage buildings, they will take out the whole group of enemy troops in one volley. Players will also place all of their Freeze and Bomb traps in these open drop zones so when attackers initially drop troops, they are instantly immobilized or blown up! Use this strategy with caution though because there are risky aspects to incorporating intentional spawn zones, one of which is if the attacker initially uses a Freeze Scroll to immobilize your surrounding defense before they drop their entire army in the the spawn zone. If they have multiple Freeze Scrolls, it makes it very difficult for you to defend against the large hoard of enemy troops and your Castle is most likely to fall (if the intentional spawn is near your Castle). I find using this strategy is most advantageous in middle layers of your base and not directly in the center, so if enemies use the aforementioned attack strategies, your Castle will still be somewhat safe for the time being. Defense Against Spells Spell scrolls are very difficult to defend against so there’s no real strategy against them. There are a few pointers I can give in terms of defending against specific Spells; however, if the attacker is equipped with multiple spells, chances are you will lose anyway. With the addition of the recent Snowball Scroll, you want to try and position your defensive buildings in a nonlinear path, meaning don’t place multiple high level defense buildings in the same line. The Snowball scroll will destroy all buildings in its path so having multiple Cannons or Lightning Towers in one straight line will be very vulnerable to enemies who carry those scrolls. Freeze Scrolls are also difficult to defend against simply due to the sheer quantity a high level attack may carry, which is 5. Try not to group your defensive buildings all together and especially not all in one location. Spreading them out forces the attacker to use more than 1 Freeze spell to immobilize your splash damage buildings such as Cannons and Lightning Towers. Aside from those simple guidelines, there’s not much more you can really do to defend against enemy spells other than hope your attacker decides not to use all of them or forgets to carry them into battle. Advanced Base Layouts There are many YouTube channels out there that share advice on how your should build your base depending on your Castle level. I suggest you take a look at some of those videos as they are helpful to demonstrate the basic concepts. A good rule to follow is placing as many layers of walls surrounding your Castle to make it harder for attackers to penetrate your defense’s core. Other strategies I’ve seen that are often useful demonstrate a “give and take†strategy. By give and take, I mean you sacrifice one thing, usually your resources, but gain on another, you usually win on defense. This strategy is common on only if you do not value your resources or have too much Essence and have nothing to use it on. The strategy allows lower level players try and attack your Essence storages, which are far away from your Castle, because they value your resources more than your Honor. Oftentimes if you spread your storages separately away from your Castle, attackers who are only interested in resources will do over 40% damage, leaving you with the intended outcome of 10 hours of shield. Now if an attacker does not care about the resources because your base’s War Points or Honor are worth more to him, than your Castle will be left less protected and you will likely be defeated, but may keep most of your resources intact. So this “give and take†strategy has its advantages and disadvantages and it depends on whether you value your Honor or your resources more and a bit of luck when it comes to the objective of the attacker. |
